Darts league scoring

League night runs on a clipboard, a stack of scoresheets and one person who is very good at arithmetic. It works, and it is the slowest part of the evening.

What goes wrong on paper

• Transcription. Scores are written on a sheet, added at the end, then typed into a spreadsheet by whoever runs the league. Every one of those steps is a chance to get it wrong.
• Disputes with no record. When two teams disagree about a leg from an hour ago, there is nothing to check. The loudest person usually wins.
• Stats nobody keeps. Most leagues track wins and losses and nothing else, because tracking averages by hand for twenty players is not realistic.
• Standings lag by a week. Results get compiled between sessions, so nobody knows where they stand on the night.
• One person carries it. Leagues fold when the organizer burns out, and the admin is what burns them out.

What to look for in a scoring app for league use

• Fast entry. Three darts a turn, twenty turns a leg, several matches a night. A keypad plus a multiplier button is too many taps.
• Correction after the fact. Somebody will mis-tap. If fixing it means restarting the leg, the app will get abandoned by round three.
• Enough players. Two is a bar game. A league needs teams, and teams need more than four names. Check what the free tier actually allows before you commit a season to it.
• Works with no signal. Bar back rooms and basements do not have reliable service. An app that needs a connection will lose a night of results.
• Readable across a room. The phone sits on a table two paces away, in bad light, and everyone needs to see the score.
• Per player history. If the app is not keeping records, you are still keeping the spreadsheet.

What Dart Meister does today

For a league that means one device per board handles the scoring for every match played on it, with Pro keeping the record, and nobody transcribes anything during the night. It does not yet do standings, brackets or scheduling.

We are saying that plainly because league organizers get sold vapour constantly. What is in the app is in the app.
